In September, 2009 at just 35 years of age, my eldest brother ended his own life. The reason why – we will never know. Dale was a devoted son, brother, uncle, partner and mate. He touched the lives of so many people whose paths crossed with his. Dale will always be remembered by the people who knew him for reasons only those close to him can know. If you had Dale as your mate, you were lucky. I am fortunate to have Dale as my brother. The loss of a loved one by suicide has such a profound effect on so many people. My experience with suicide has motivated me to make a personal difference which is where Cycle 4 Life begins. In September, 2011, with the aid of Lifeline and together with friend, Gary Lilley, we will be embarking on a journey cycling close to 1600km from Canberra to Brisbane generating awareness of suicide prevention whilst raising vital funds for Lifeline. Life is precious, but at times can be full of challenges. It is how we face and overcome these challenges that ultimately determines our happiness and emotional wellbeing. At times we need a little help and support along the way which is where the truly unique and vital organisation – Lifeline www.lifeline.org.au is so important. Lifeline provides help and crisis support for thousands of Australians, 24 hours a day, year after year. Statistics show that suicide is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 44 and women under the age of 35 in Australia. Six people die by suicide every day in Australia. TOGETHER WE CAN HELP MAKE EVERY LIFE COUNT |
